There is no housing shortage. The problem is a lack of regulation of housing prices.

"Ian Mulheirn, an expert from Oxford Economics, said that the figures suggested that allowing developers to build more homes would not do much to bring down prices.

He said prices are only likely to be lowered if and when mortgage rates began to rise."

The number of empty homes in the UK is at its highest level for 20 years, calling into question whether the countryside needs to be concreted over for new developments.
